Foxboro - This rivarly has been far better than advertised. In the third installment of Newton vs. Mansfield, the lead changed hands 11 times before Newton dominated the fourth quarter to leave Mass Premier Courts with a 74-60 win.
Mansfield jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the game. Newton quickly bounced back with an 11-2 run to grab a 13-10 edge. Ryan Boulter nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to knot the game up at 13 after the first quarter.
Mansfield picked up the pace offensively in the second quarter outscoring Newton 21-13 behind 8 points from Brendan Hill. Hill scored on a variety ways including a 15-foot jumper, an impressive drive to the basket in traffic and even added a couple freebies. Tommy Mobley paced Newton in that quarter by scoring seven points, including some tough baskets in the paint and a pair of "and-1's."
Mansfield took a 34-26 advantage into the half.
In the third quarter it looked as if Mansfield was going to pull away when the Hornets took their largest lead of the game, 40-28, with a Mansfield lay-up on a sweet bounce pass dish from Brendan Hill. However, from that point Newton went on a 15-8 run to close the gap to five points with Mansfield clinging to a 48-43 lead entering the last quarter.
With the two best teams in the Metro West league battling down the stretch, the physical play was elevated on both ends with the understanding that this game had post season implications.
Newton fought back to close the gap to 50-46 early in the fourth quarter, when Coach Greg Mobley got a technical foul after he argued a call, or lack there of one. Boulter went on to make one of two free throws.
This game could have gone one of two ways from this point in the game. Newton could have packed it in right there and Mansfield could have pounced on Newton to put them away early in the quarter. Or, Newton could have rallied around one another after facing adversity and pick up the intensity even higher on both ends.
Newton chose the latter.
Newton promptly went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the second half, 54-51, keyed by forcing Mansfield's (and possibly the Select Hoops area's) most composed player, Brendan Hill, into two turnovers. Koby Antwi scored four points during that stretch.
After Mansfield took a 56-55 lead on a 3-pointer from the top of the key, Newton went on another run, this one a 7-0 burst, to push its lead to 62-56. Newton's defense forced two of Mansfield better ball handlers, Will Kelliher and Ryan Boulter, into travels in the stretch.
After sitting the entire third quarter with Coach Mobley going with a small and more athletic line-up to pick up the pace, Ethan Webster-Zinn scored six tough points down the stretch to put the game out of reach.
Tommy Mobley led all scorers with 21 points. Antwi scored 12 points and Napolean Miller added 11.
For Mansfield, Boulter scored 17 points (4 3's) and Hill added 14.
