Newton defeated three teams to capture the 8th grade championship in the MLK Classic at the M-Plex Monday. They opened the day by beating a strong Sandwich team, then outlasted an extremely talented New Bedford squad and ended with a victory over their rival Mansfield, 73-58.
The teams played a pretty even first half, exchanging leads throughout before Newton went on a 10-4 run to close out the period and go into the break with a 34-30 cushion.
Tommy Mobley led Newton at the half with 10 points while scoring in a handful of different ways.
Ryan Boulter led Mansfield into the half with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Multi-talented big man, Brendan Hill, chipped in with six.
Newton went on a 13-6 run to start the second half and never looked back.
Mobley led the the scoring charge for Newton with 19 points. Koby Antwi had 10 and Joe DeNucci chipped in with 8 points for Newton.
Boulter and Hill led Mansfield with 19 points apiece.
Mansfield beat Northampton comfortably in the semi finals.
Tommy Mobley was named MVP of the tournament.
