Foxboro - Mansfield proved once again why they are the cream of the crop this season as they hosted and defeated Easton at Mass Premier this past Sunday, 71-53.
The first quarter was extremely sloppy for both teams with lots of turnovers. Easton held an 11-10 edge after the first frame.
Mansfield woke up in the second quarter and played extremely aggressive taking the ball to the basket and getting to the foul line, where the Hornets shot extremely well.
Mansfield started the second quarter with a 9-0 run with balanced scoring and great man to man defense.
Later in the quarter, Mansfield went on another 9-0 run keyed by four points by AJ Centrella. Mansfield outscored Easton 22-12 in the frame to take a 32-23 lead into halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Mansfield's multi-talented big man, Brendan Hill. Hill showed an array of skills as he scored 7 points and assisted on a pair of other baskets in the frame. Hill finished with contact at the rim, showed he can comfortably knock down 15-foot shots, and hit teammates with great passes while playing point guard at times as the tallest player on the court.
Easton proved to be scrappy throughout the game with some tough finishes by John McMillen and Brendan Welch.
Mansfield did a great job of rotating defenders Centrella, Michael Boen, Sean Cleary and Will Kelliher on Easton's smooth play maker Ryan Carney. Carney showed flashes of his skills with some nifty ball handling moves and passes, but was held to only seven points.
Mansfield jumped out to a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away and secure the victory.
McMillen and Welch led Easton in scoring with 13 points apiece.
Hill led all scorers with 15 points. Michael Boen added 11 points for Mansfield on some fearless drives to the basket resulting in lay-up for free threws. Ryan Boulter finished with 10 points.
Mansfield stays on top of the power rankings for another week.
