After coasting through their first two games in their own tournament on Saturday, the North Attleboro 8th grade girls were finally tested by Canton on Sunday at The M-Plex - at least for a half.
North Attleboro started off with two quick buckets - one by Danielle Perron and one by Melissa Beaupre - and it looked like they would run away with the game. Canton initially appeared rattled by North's 2-2-1 full court press, however, once they slowed down a bit and relaxed, Canton did a nice job of passing through the pressure.
Canton went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-4 lead keyed by two buckets by Eileen Khoury.
The lead changed hands seven times in the first half and North took a 25-22 lead into intermission.
Eileen Khoury had a strong first half and made a lot of plays on both ends for Canton. She guarded Beaupre well and had a few blocks and steals. On the offensive end, Khoury had six points while setting up her teammates for multiple good looks. She was also key in breaking the press.
Canton's Kailee Duserick led her team with eight first half points, with most coming of those points coming off of steals.
Perron and Beaupre combined for 14 of North Attleboro's 25 first half points. Perron's six points came on a few nifty runners, while Beaupre's eight points were tallied on tough buckets in the paint and free throws.
In the second half, North Attleboro immediately ran away with the game and proved why they are considered an elite team in this area. They used their depth and balanced scoring attack to take control of the game.
North played mistake free and used a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 35-22. During the run, North successfully executed a "box-and-one" defense on Khoury which disrupted the way she played. North's Caraline Kummer and Kylie Paul did an excellent job of shadowing Khoury everywhere while Canton tried to get in a half court offense.
Kummer and Paul also turned on the offense in the second half. Paul scored 10 straight North points during a stretch early in the half while Kummer scored 6 straight North points towards the end of the game.
North held Canton to only five second half points and won the game 51-27.
Duserick led Canton with eight points and Khoury chipped in six.
Paul led North with 14 points. Beaupre scored 13, Kummer had eight and Perron finished with seven.
